MEET THE DESIGNER
I'm Vi, the designer and founder of Dolly Pearl. I live in New York City, and have been a resident here for a little over 9 years. I think that's the point at which you can say you're an official 'New Yorker', but I'm still a Texas girl forever. Living in New York gives me life though, and there is no place in the world like it, so I'm here for now--until I'm ready for my next adventure. I am an introverted Sagittarius, which is rare, because this sign is typically extrovert. I love solitude and my alone time, and I typically don't look for company, but will always welcome those who are genuine, warm, and a pleasure to be around (especially those with a wicked sense of humor). I wouldn't exactly say that I'm shy, but more that I'm careful about how I expend my energy, because it takes so much out of me to be social. I feel like I'm generally misunderstood often because of this, but I don't mind because I've never felt the need to explain myself to anyone. Those who are closest to me get to experience my extremely dry sense of humor (you can't even tell that I'm joking often, but I am super playful), my outspokenness (I have foot in mouth syndrome), and my willingness to go out of my way to help someone in need. When I'm not working or being creative, I love reading/learning about any and everything, and watching documentaries, or reruns of my favorite TV comedies--like Seinfeld, Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Portlandia, and The Simpsons. I do a really good Milhouse impression (you'll probably never see it). I listen to music everyday on my subway commutes. My favorite genre is acoustic rock from the 70's (America, Bread, Jim Croce, Fleetwood Mac), but I also know the lyrics to the entirety of Kanye West's MBDTF, and I pray that you ask me about it. I love being creative in every way. Interior design is my first love, I dabble in photography, and I paint and draw on occasion. I have a fondness for art and architecture. I also have a passion for cooking, especially trying my hand at Vietnamese cuisine.
Though I have many hobbies and interests, work pretty much consumes my life, and I love that I have the opportunity to enjoy what I do for a living--regardless of the challenges that comes with it. I don't really have an off day, so I don't know what it's like to 'work for the weekend', but I do my best to balance everything daily and take time off so that I don't get burned out. My best and most creative work comes late at night, so I'm that night owl friend who you can always count on to respond to your texts at like 2AM. When Tom Ford said, "I am a perfectionist to the point of insanity", I really felt that. It really sums up my design and work ethic.
I studied Interior Design and Architecture, and graduated with a Fine Arts degree at the University of Houston in Texas. My career transition to Fashion began when my oldest sister urged me to enter a design contest for Glamour Magazine. I didn't think much of it, but the deadline was within a few days of her telling me, so I overnighted the design and forgot about it. About a month later, I got the call from Glamour that I had won the contest and a weeklong trip to New York. That trip was life changing, and was the reason for my move to New York. There, I attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan for two years, and then decided I was ready to start my own line. So here we are.
